These wooden animals were originally made as a christmas present for little Miss Carrott.
They became so popular that I now make them to order and sell them at my exhibitions.
The Wacky Woodies are my best way to use all the ridiculously short off-cuts that I kept for years. You will find oak, cherry, maple, lacewood (London Plane), yew, sapele, ash, walnut, olive ash, mahogany, utile, cedar, beech, willow, eucalyptus, spalted beech, iroko, bamboo, sycamore, pine, and (hu)man-made boards, such as chipboard, plywood, and M.D.F.
I realised that people wanted them not only for their children or grandchildren but for themselves too, as a decorative item. So, for young children and for old kids.
They are superbly finished and I use children friendly natural oils.

I got involved in this very exciting Tornado Farewell project the moment I got a phone call from a No. IX Bomber Squadron pilot in RAF Marham.
The iconic RAF Panavia Tornado GR4 fighter jet has been decommissioned since March 2019.
This memento project consists in melting down scrap steel from the Tornado Jets and re-casting it to be transformed into a series of commemorative Tornado sculptures.
You can follow this project here from the beginning, but for those who can’t wait, here are some pictures of the piece.
The first finished 1:75 Tornado scale replica of the RAF Panavia Tornado GR4 fighter jet.
The Limited Edition 1000 jets are cast in steel from 27mm Mauser Cannons taken out of decommissioned RAF Marham Tornados.
The jet is supported by an original titanium RB199 compressor blade from the Tornado’s Rolls Royce engines and attached to the iroko plinth.
Handmade jets by Raven Armoury, Iroko hardwood kindly donated by Sandringham Royal Sawmill and the plinths handmade by me.

A bedroom alcove was in clear need of an update so I thought I’d use some of the numerous workshop off-cuts and mistakes (mistakes???) that I have lying around in the workshop.
The reclaimed bits and bobs used were from all sorts of places and recycled pieces. There is mahogany, ash, elm, sycamore one, sycamore two, walnut, maple, oak, iroko, keruing, spalted beech and some other wood looking timber.

The bedroom alcove is now a focal point in the cottage’s room with a very warm and welcoming feel.

The rest and smaller bits shall be used for Wacky Woodies.

Chris is an RAF pilot that flew the Tornado GR4, which were all decommissioned in 2019.

He asked me to make a base for a hand controller taken from one of the jets to sit along to his Tornado GR4 model.

The joystick had to preserve its springy movements which meant that it had to keep the original mechanism below the actual controller, thus giving plenty of space for three Tornado jets inlaid in maple on three sides and a personal engraved plaque on the fourth.

The 67˚angle of the base is the same angle of the real life jet’s folded wings, which makes the iconic shape of the Tornado GR1/4.

The wood used is iroko, which was donated by the Sandringham estate for the Tornado GR4 Memento Project.

This time, I was ordered by the same RAF pilot to make another base for a set of Tornado GR4 Active Grab Handles, which are the commands that allow the pilot to cheat on an incoming missile. The same 67˚ angle of the Tornado wings was used in this plinth all around and a maple handcut inlay of the iconic jet between the two handles.

The wood used was iroko.

Chris Wood is a Light Artist in Cambridgeshire and along with her team, they create some wonderful pieces of art that involve reflection, colour, light and in many cases, the Sun itself.

I was involved in co-designing and making this artistic creation for Chris who is exhibiting this and many more pieces in 45 Park Lane, London, a very posh hotel, until 29 April 2019.

This is “Tadah”.

The fantastic looking glasswork was created by Stewart Hearn from London Glassworks.

The LED lights are transformed when they hit the dichroic acrylics, a material originally developed by NASA in the 1960’s. As they change colour, they now meet the next part of Tadah. The display is the result of the reflection given by the lights through Stewart’s beautiful handmade work.

Thank you, Chris, for the chance to work with you!

The third chapter of “Not Such a Wacky Story” gives us yet another example of how the Sapiens believe that all animals are here for our benefit and entertainment, in a hopefully clear and tragically sarcastic tone.

Not Such a Wacky Story.

Chapter 3. What on Earth is Going on?

This zoo kept all sorts of Wacky Woodies inside ingeniously natural surroundings. Maybe a log here and there, deviously resembling wild, native and certainly savage landscapes and conditions.
They all had very discreet shiny white plastic containers on bricks for tap water coming from a long, unnoticeably bright yellow No-torsion-System hose.

There usually was a big rock around, and even some cunningly imaginative bunches of branches hanging off the roofs tied with bright-sky-blue rope, maybe sometimes taking too much attention from the nicely concreted levelled floors that were, again, cleverly disguised with the quaggy dirt.
When you think about it, nature really is like that, and even though the Wacky Woodies could choose anything else to do in their crafty new habitat, chewing that hose was at the top of fun-things-to-do.
The metal wire fence surrounding the small enclosure gave the impression of an undomesticated vast open realm with plenty of direct light at all times. And the whole sly setting worked a treat as wildlife camouflage, with the log and all.
But the Wacky Woodies needed to get a grip and appreciate their new lives, where everything is served on a plate.

These features granted a great opportunity for them to be seen at all times and so visitors could learn from their daily behaviour and natural habitat. Thanks to the bright lighting, you could visit them at any time and observe their routine. Just like in real life.

After all, the security electric fences were only there for their own safety. Cities can be dangerous places and you can’t just leave animals wandering around…

Don’t be ignorant. Say no to zoos.

Not Such a Wacky Story.

The fourth sibling from the Contrast Series and the largest so far. Big brotha is home, innit.

Very similar design from the good old original but the customers wanted to use it as a display cabinet for some beautifully home-made metal work made by the new owners and other really cool artistic pieces.

This one has walnut drawer fronts, oak drawer sides and back, and also two instead of a one off-set door with shelves inside.
After delivery, we were even invited for a vegan lunch in Surrey!

Thank you Clive & Anne. You just bought furniture for life.

Thomas is the son of a faithfully returning couple that I met in one of my exhibitions a while ago. In time, they bought some Wacky Woodies, key bowls and they also bought my daughter’s Wacky House (which until then was just for show…) but she still doesn’t know I sold it.
This year I met them again and now they wanted a height chart. I thought I could come up with something a tad more special than the ones online.
Made in walnut, oak and molten metal.

Let their imagination run wild

The Wacky Woodies are made with London plane, yew, oak, walnut, good old pine from a fence post, ash, beech from my daughter’s cot (I know, I’m going downhill…), other beech not from a cot and olive ash. The carved plaque is made with sapele and masur birch veneer, showing Thomas’s star sign, the Aries ram. (With some imagination). However, if you want a real woodcarver, you are clearly not going to call me, but do please get in touch with my friend Jon Leaf.

I will make you a bespoke height chart in all different wood species and designs, free-standing or wall-hung.

The customer wanted the measurements marked in feet and inches only, but I’ll make it in centimetres, or both if you prefer. After all it is for you and you are paying.

Dimensions of the pictured one:

Height: 1m 34cm

Width: 20cm

depth: 2.5cm

Prices vary. But don’t go away yet. For something like this one, in walnut, including solid wood inch markings, molten metal markings and details, Wacky Woodies and a personalised plaque…

I’ve seen the ones online too. They are quite cheap, yes. And rather ordinary.

Have a look at how it was made here.

If you like the look of these little gems, click here for more!

You can see some more examples of the Wacky charts in my online shop.

P.S. A few years later, Alexander James, Thomas’ new brother, was born and so I received a call asking if I could make one for him as well. Alexander’s zodiac sign is rat so soon enough, another Wacky plaque was sent to meet the family.

“Not Such a Wacky Story”

Chapter 2. Not a clue.

(For Chapter 1, click here)

MotoMouse C2 started her “Mission Unnameable” the moment she found out about the place. Her snitch is The Wacky Old One: sluggardly slow, with big round eyes and a face of not a clue. Although he could barely see, the truth was out there, and now impossible to miss, even for him.
The week before MotoMouse C2 and The Wacky Old One met, news arrived to town and troubling information was in the airs.
An important number of Wacky Woodies had been captured once again from The Land, and taken somehow hostage, to the local prison.
No explanations were given to any of the victims, but The Wacky Old One, who is always up and down plants, trees and walls, decided to check out this issue.
What he found was only known as night terrors, where inexplicable situations, baffling horrors and defenceless results were the answer.
