Naoko Sideboard

Naoko is an Oriental style sideboard-central piece made of naturally dried Norfolk olive ash and American cherry. Very smooth to the touch, strikingly elegant and imposing to the sight. The hand-cut dovetails in the drawers, turned cherry handles and soft curves make of this piece a bespoke example of traditional methods and modern design.

The Naoko sideboard is a perfect example of simple lines, smooth curves, playing with contrasting wood species. The olive ash combined with the cherry give a pleasing warmth and elegance to the room.

In 2013 I was nominated for the City and Guilds Medal for Excellence for designing and making this piece.

Dimensions are: 116cm long x 60 wide x 89cm high.

Shelving

Bitbot Shelf

The Bitbot Shelves are made of all of the off-cuts and not so off-cuts that I find in the workshop (and anywhere else). I use many reclaimed and recycled bits that I gathered along during my woodworking life.

You will find teak, ash, oak, mahogany, sycamore, beech, sapele, cherry, maple, london plane, walnut, cedar, pine and (hu)man-made boards. All of the components show their real colours and none are dyed at the workshop.
Brings out colour to that awkward space in your house or office. Any length, any width, any thickness…

You decide. It’s your shelf.

It isn’t just a lot of sticks glued to each other. That doesn’t work. Trust me…

Each component has two holes made very accurately with my homemade jig and there are two threaded bars that run along the length of the shelf, tightening the different pieces like a sandwich. Depending on the dimensions, it will have a support that runs below and this could be made in wood, aluminium or other metals of your choice.

And then I just glue the sticks to each other!

But then… it will be heavily sanded both by machine and by hand until I’m happy with it. The natural oil which is applied by hand does the rest. It looks fantastic!

Boxes

The F-box

My client F wanted a lockable personal box and I was free to play with whatever shape, design and wood species.

I knew that nature, organic forms and oriental design was of her liking so I decided to make this very special lady a very special birthday present.

This piece was made with European oak and English walnut, and it certainly was a pleasure to design, make and finish.

The acacia top was one of those pointlessly short pieces of timber that all woodworkers have in their workshop thinking that sometime they will come useful, but knowing very well that they won’t.

Well, this one did. And what a surprise!

The shaping of this organic top was done by hand, in both rough and gentle ways, thus giving such a changing display of hues in different natural and artificial lights.

The sizes are 39cm long x 26cm wide x 11cm high.

Anita‘s trinket box is a thoughtful present for someone (or yourself…) to find a perfect place for all those love letters, the sad ones, and the ones we never sent but we still keep in our drawers…

Important documents and old pictures, everything can be locked safely away keeping our memories alive.

Made in a traditional style with hand-cut dovetails and the size that suits you best. Depending on your love life.
Made in solid American cherry, English walnut and European beech.

Dimensions are: 42cm long x 21cm wide x 22cm high.

This trinket box is an elegant way to keep small objects and letters. Or it can be used as a sewing box like my mum does.
I send her e-mails.

Made in solid sycamore, walnut veneered lid and walnut details.

Dimensions: 30cm x 30cm x 5cm high.

Cheval mirror

This Cheval mirror was made with curved legs in cherry and mahogany. It is adjustable by a walnut turned knob to get the desired angle for all those tall people in the world.

I don’t need to adjust it. I can hardly reach the handle.

Dimensions are: 1.48m high, 50cm wide, 27cm depth.
I am more than pleased to fit any size mirror you want and in other wood species.

In fact, I will be very pleased to make anything you want me to make.

Mirrors

Bond Mirror

This mirror is made in lacewood (London plane) and joined together with handmade butterfly ripple sycamore joints, giving a beautiful contrast in woods which at the same time are proud from the rectangular frame. You may look at yourself in the mirror, but you must touch the frame after. It is just the way it happens…

Dimensions are: 84cm long x 64cm wide. The mirror can be used on its side as well (If you are fat or really really short).
Dimensions of the mirror: 50cm long x 36cm wide.

Ripple Mirror

This mirror was made using ripple sycamore and American walnut in the corner details.

Simple construction and style. The ripple effect of the sycamore plays with each ray of light discovering its true texture.

Dimensions are: 66cm long x 40cm wide.

Dimensions of the mirror: 53cm long x 26cm wide.

Chessboard

A beautiful chessboard made with an intricate eye for detail. Each and every piece of the different veneers have been cut by hand with a scalpel, some of them scorched with very hot sand to give the shaded impression of a woven basket on the decorative side. (See more pictures of this technique here).

Veneered with sycamore, walnut burr, imbuya, bird’s eye maple and lacewood.

Dimensions are: 36cm x 36cm x 2cm high.
