Making the Zero-8 Coffee Table

The Zero-8 Coffee Table with glass and marquetry top was made in solid English cherry. The technique for the shading of the veneers isn’t by using wood dyes, but by dipping them in very hot sand, scorching the edges giving that fantastic 3-d illusion.

Not long after making this table, I met Sue and John from Suffolk who came to one of my exhibitions and commissioned a table also made in cherry but with a solid top.

The English cherry used in this coffee table came from a very well forgotten corner in the timber store from the college I used to study. Very old wood and slowly air dried in a dark and quiet place. It was a real pleasure to work with from beginning to end.
