Unity – Jewellery box on a stand
Unity is a jewellery box on a stand commissioned by a client whom I met about 10 years ago in Weird and Wonderful Wood fair in Haughley Park, Suffolk.
In these 10 years, this client made sure to get a number of Wacky Woodies but soon enough it was time to commission a more important piece.
This was a fantastic one-off piece and I was delighted to be given, pretty much, a blank canvas to work on it. Only a few loose dimensions were mentioned, ish sort of thing, and I was in.
There is a video uploaded on my YouTube channel of how the piece was made from rough sawn wood from the sawmill to the final hand-finished piece. No music, just the sound of tools being used and wood being worked on. There is also nose hair being trimmed.
This jewellery box was made using American cherry, white American ash, and the top was made using a number of forgotten dusty lengths of wood that woodworkers always have around the workshop.
The client has been a fan of my work and always admired my show stand every time she saw me. For many reasons, it was never the right time to go ahead. After all these years since we met, things slowly were sorting themselves out and I was on her bucket list, which may sound silly, but it was a bit of an honour to be considered like this.
From a simple sketch to show dimensions, it was decided.
Unity is the result of a potpourri of family life stories, situations and hard times slowly transformed into better ones.
At the same time, I’ve been longing to fuse these ideas into one: my favourite pieces, details and ideas, but mainly ego, creating once more, a unique example.
The name came to me as I was working on the design, and once it stuck, I couldn’t do much more than go with it.
